How to Declutter Before a Custom Closet Install

Very few people enjoy decluttering. But most love the feeling of a clean, custom closet install.

Yet many see decluttering as something that happens after the new closet goes in. Once the shelves are clean and the system is in place, then they’ll edit things down.

But Bella’s designers see it the other way around.

What you own and what you’re willing to let go of can determine quite a bit about the system that will work for you:

  • How many feet of hanging space do you really need?
  • Do you need three drawers or six for your belongings?
  • How much overhead cabinet space is worth building?

Declutter with a plan first, and your custom install becomes a precise fit rather than an educated guess. Here’s the method our team at Bella recommends before install day.

Decluttering Before the Install Changes the Design

Here’s the reality: a custom closet built around your current clutter is already too small.

When the designer sizes your hanging sections to fit everything you own today, that includes everything. That means the things you never reach for and the items you’ve been meaning to donate for longer than that.

Building around an edited closet gives your custom closet designer more accurate numbers to work with. This leads to a system built to hold what you use day to day. Every linear foot of hanging space and every drawer counts in a custom layout.

Step 1: Clear It Out and Take Inventory

The best way to start? With a full closet reset.

Take everything out of the closet so you can see the actual space dimensions, wall condition, and floor area. Once cleared out, wipe down all surfaces while they’re empty and confirm measurements with your designer. This is the moment you can catch anything that needs patching or painting before the cabinetry goes in.

Group your items by category as you take them out. Think practically: is this workwear, casual wear, shoes, accessories, or seasonal?

Seeing everything laid out at once is clarifying in a way that pushing through an overstuffed closet never is. The piles tell you the truth about what you own faster than any audit.

Step 2: Declutter by Category — Keep, Donate, Discard

With everything visible, it’s time to declutter – category by category.

An effective seasonal organization approach follows a three-way sort: keep, donate, discard. You can do this in piles to keep it simple: a keep pile contains items that fit, that you’ve actually worn in the past year, and that are in good condition. Everything else belongs somewhere else.

Here are some questions to ask as you go through each item:

  • “Would I buy this again today?”
  • “Does this fit me now, not eventually??
  • “Could I donate this and not miss it?”

You’ll find that the edit tends to go further when you physically hold the item in your hands rather than shove it back on the rod. A ruthless keep pile helps you end up with a right-sized system — one that was built for your real wardrobe, not the version of it in your head!

Step 3: Visualize Your Routine, Not Just Your Inventory

At this point, it’s time to start designing the new closet! But rather than building around the piles of keep items, think through how you use your closet (or how you’d like to be using your closet).

Where do you look first? What do you want to grab without thinking? What slows you down?

Custom closet design works best when it’s built around a daily routine. The pieces you reach for every weekday belong at eye level and within arm’s reach.

Occasional-use items (think seasonal pieces, formal wear, or season-based sports gear) can live on higher or lower shelves where they’re easy to reach when needed but not always jutting out or in the way.

Step 4: Map Your Categories to Future Zones

With a decluttered inventory and a routine in mind, the real designing starts. And this is a good time to think about how your space will be used today and in the future.

Start by counting your hanging pieces — are they mostly short items like shirts and folded pants, or long pieces like dresses and coats?

Then think about items that can be stored on shelves or drawers. How many pairs of shoes do you own? How many folded items could go in drawers versus open shelves?

This gives you the raw material for a custom layout. A well-designed closet doesn’t spread space evenly across a generic template, but instead matches hanging sections, drawers, and shelves to what you own.

Bella uses adjustable shelving, built-in drawers, pull-out rods, and overhead cabinets to right-size each zone to your edited wardrobe.

Step 5: Prep the Room for Install Day

Ready to bring your closet to life? Before installation day, take the time to finish clearing the closet of any remaining items. Remove any hooks, temporary rods, or wall hardware that won’t be part of the new system. This is a great time to patch and paint, since the cabinetry runs against the finished walls.

Clear a path to the closet and give the team a clean, accessible space to work. Bella’s install process is designed for minimal disruption, and most installs are completed in less than a day — but the cleaner the room going in, the faster and more precisely the system comes together.

Your Custom Closet Awaits!

Your closet should be a space you enjoy using every day. So when it’s time for a custom upgrade, taking the time to declutter your space can go a long way to bringing your ideal space to life.
