General Murphy Bed Questions and Answers

What is a murphy bed?

A murphy bed is an attached, fixed-to-the-wall, unit that contains a bed. The bed is usually hidden from view by the doors when closed. When opened, there is a bed inside the wall unit cabinet, usually configured with doors that open from the middle of the unit. A murphy bed is then pulled-down from the wall and set upon the floor. The mattress is contained in the pull-down wallbed.

The pull-down or swing-out system is essential to hiding your bed while making it easy to pull or swing out. Because of the way murphy beds are built, a high-quality murphy bed should be easy to use and pose no danger, using a system that uses the weight of the bed for both pull-down and fold-away.

Murphy beds are called by many names with very little differentiation except for where you live. Some places will call it a wallbed exclusively, and this makes sense as it’s attached to the wall. Also, murphy beds are known as wallbeds by most. This, also, makes sense as the bed is seemingly hidden in the wall.

Fold-down bed, hidden bed, and foldaway bed are also commonly used names for a murphy bed.

Murphy bed purchases and installations are on the rise in the US as people begin to utilize smaller spaces to maximize utility. In the US, approximately $500,000,000 (million) in murphy beds and accessories are sold and installed yearly. Typically, murphy beds are much more popular in urban city settings where space is an absolute premium – such as in apartments, condos, split-rentals and extra roommates. However, in more rural settings, a murphy bed also makes sense when space for guests might not be something that’s guest-ready. That said, Murphy Beds are making a comeback as a retro-fashion statement, with enough accessories that make it a novel addition to any guest room.

Murphy bed space needed all depends on any additions and the size of the mattress you choose. A single size will take up approximately two feet less than a queen-sized bed. Most pull-down beds will contain the mattress inside the wall, and so the width of the murphy bed container will be larger with a larger bed.

With a single-sized bed, you can expect to need a 5.5 foot wall space for a mounted wallbed. Anything smaller will not allow the bed to open with enough space for you to get in from the sides.

Lengthwise and ceiling-clearance, you should plan for 6.5 feet for the bed space, and allow another 1.5 feet for you to stand and move while pulling the bed down from the wall.

It’s also important to remember that adding bookshelf accessories on one or both sides of the murphy bed will extend the size of the wall needed to hold the wallbed. With even relatively thin shelving accessories, it’s an additional 5 feet needed for the wall space for your wallbed.

These are very different things. Panel doors relate to murphy beds, but panel beds are not wallbeds.

A panel bed is referring to the frame of the bed. Instead of a normal metal frame, a panel bed provides a more platform-style frame for the bed to sit upon. It’s usually an aesthetic choice.

A murphy bed is also called a wallbed or a pull-down bed. It is not to be confused with a panel bed even though the bed is usually contained by panel doors.

Panel doors are often physically attached to the bed but a murphy bed can also be hidden in the cabinet by bifold doors.

Many different businesses are selling murphy beds, and you can buy them in physical stores or even online. Keep in mind, if shipped, the installation is up to you. Furthermore, you should check with the seller before you buy a wallbed, and find out if there’s a return policy or any type of guarantee. Lastly, find out how many murphy beds are sold by the business each year. Many different people will sell a wallbed without understanding the right way to install them, and this creates a dangerous situation for all involved.

Like the name implies, a vertical murphy bed pulls down from the wall, vertically. It is the typical installation for a murphy bed and the most common to accessorize with. These are used when a room has enough ceiling and length space in the room to pull-down a bed from the wall.

A horizontal murphy bed will swing from the wall mounting versus being pull-down. These beds are used when the room is wider than it is lengthwise. A room like this is more rectangular and are usually thinner than a normal sized room.

We like to think about the 4 S of Murphy Beds, and the two R’s of Murphy Bed Companies:

– Size: What’s the size of the room you’re looking at putting a murphy bed inside? Does it have the right ceiling clearance and wallspace to put the bed where you want? Are there accessories you want to add that will expand the size of the wallbed cabinet footprint?
– Space Savings: What space are you looking to conserve? Do you want to add a desk or a sofa to the murphy bed you’re buying, and how much more space will those save in the room? Adding bookshelves on your murphy bed cabinet can save you 5 feet of bookshelving wall space in antoher part of your house.
– Style: What color and style do you want for your room? Does the murphy bed company you’re looking to purchase from offer only a few styles or can you choose from an assortment of finishes? Limited choices usually means a limited business.
– Spend: What’s your budget for this murphy bed project? You will likely have to balance size and space with your desire for accessories. Lighting is easy – but picking a desk on your wallbed will add to the price and installation complexity…which is why the two R’s below are super important.

– Reviews: Look online at the company’s reviews. Look at different locations ala Yelp, Google, Facebook, and Houzz when reviewing who you want to install your bed.
– Recency: Ask how often the murphy bed company sells and installs their wallbeds. A quality store that focuses on selling murphy beds should not have a large gap between their last sale and installation. Not selling a lot of wallbeds can be a sign the project might be more complex than they can handle.

How long does it take for my Murphy Bed to be ready? Do your source your products in the USA?

Once ordered, the wallbed cabinet construction and delivery to our warehouses. The timing of delivery depending on the number of accessories and styling we add to your murphy bed.

After that, we simply verify your installation appointment and come to you – a murphy bed installation by Bella Systems will take less than one day on most projects. If there’s any extra time needed for the murphy bed installation, our designers will let you know ahead of time.

Yes, delivery and installation of your murphy bed is included with the price of the bed purchase. If you have added a mattress to your purchase, that cost is also already factored into the price of your murphy bed.

No, there is no additional cost to your Bella Systems murphy bed delivery.

Bella Systems offers four types of murphy beds, and any of our murphy beds can be customized with storage cabinets and shelving for books and the like. Beds are available in Single, Double, or Queen Sizes depending on the model. Between availble models, finishes, hardware and accesories the combinations possibiltys are endless.

The Luna Bed is our budget-friendly murphy bed and offers comfort and space savings without compromising style for price.The Luna wallbed features bifold doors and a pull-down vertical style bed. Prices start at $3500 for a space-saving pull-down bed solution.

Our Cielo style murphy bed is the intermediate price-point in our family of murphy beds. The cielo bed is a panel style wall bed. Its avaible in both vertical & horz configurations.
Our Stella Bed is a multifunctional bed with an opening system that is unique on the market: bed mechanism auto-deploys a work surface. Perfect for someone who works remotley or providing the kids with a homework station.
Our highest-end murphy bed, the Cielo Sofa, is our elegant answer to the traditional wallbed. This multifunction bed with an opening system that is unique on the market: sofa mechanism with automatic deployment of hidden legs.

Bella Systems offers the Lux Synergy line of mattresses for our murphy beds, exclusively manufactured for us by Sandman.

Our hybrid mattress is a traditional-style mattress that comes in double or queen sizes. This mattress contains 3″ of multi-layered foam comfort zones sitting atop a 6″ high-support coil and spring system for support.

Our gel-style mattresses will hug your body as you sink into comfort, these are also available in double or queen sizes. These wallbed mattresses use an all-foam, no-coil model. Think of this as a mattress you sink into as it conforms to your body.

Both the hybrid and gel mattresses are delivered to your home and installed with white-glove service. Both provide a fantastic night of sleep for anyone fortunate enough to use your murphy bed!

Please note: If you are purchasing a single-sized murphy bed, we are unable to provide mattresses at this time. Our Bella Systems team may be able to suggest where you can purchase a mattress for this size of pull down bed.
